Female fertility can be affected by a range of factors – from hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, genetic disorders and adhesions of the fallopian tubes after inflammation, to immune reactions in which a woman's body produces antibodies against her partner's sperm.

With increasing age, a woman's natural ability to conceive also declines. After the age of 35, the quality and number of eggs decrease, and after the age of 40, the probability of conceiving naturally is significantly reduced. Age-related impaired egg maturation is therefore one of the most common causes of female infertility.

Pelvic ultrasound examination

A basic diagnostic examination that assesses the condition of the uterus and ovaries. Ultrasound makes it possible to visualise the shape and size of the uterus, the presence of fibroids, the quality of the uterine lining and follicle growth. The examination also helps detect cysts or endometriosis lesions.

Blocked fallopian tubes are a common cause of female infertility, especially after previous inflammation or surgery. Fallopian tube patency is examined using ultrasound and a foam contrast agent. This procedure makes it possible to determine whether the fallopian tubes allow the egg to pass naturally after ovulation.

Hormonal testing

Hormonal testing is one of the basic steps in identifying the causes of difficulties with conceiving. An important test is the measurement of Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), which indicates the ovarian reserve and helps the doctor estimate how the body may respond to hormonal treatment.

In some cases, extended blood hormone testing is also performed, monitoring the levels of FSH and LH, which influence egg maturation and ovulation. These blood samples are usually taken at the beginning of the menstrual cycle, on days 1–3.

AMH and other hormones, such as prolactin or thyroid hormones (TSH and fT4), can be tested on any day of the menstrual cycle.

The aim of genetic testing is to detect congenital chromosomal abnormalities that may prevent conception or cause recurrent miscarriages. Karyotype testing is recommended especially for women after repeated unsuccessful IVF cycles, spontaneous miscarriages, or in cases where embryos stop developing.

Immunological testing

Immunological testing

The immune system can play a significant role in infertility. In some women, the body produces antibodies against sperm, eggs or embryos.

Immunological tests help detect these antibodies and assess whether an immune reaction may be preventing embryo implantation.

The examination is recommended especially for women in whom repeated embryo transfers of good-quality embryos have not resulted in a successful pregnancy.

When should I see a specialist?

If you have been trying to conceive for more than 12 months, or for 6 months if you are over 35, we recommend booking a fertility assessment.

Is the examination painful?

Most examinations are painless. Mild discomfort may occur during the fallopian tube patency test, but the procedure does not take long and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

What if the results are normal, but pregnancy still does not occur?

In that case, we will extend the diagnostics to include your partner's examination and specialised tests. In many cases, fertility can be supported with appropriate treatment or assisted reproduction.
