HyFoSy is an ultrasound examination of fallopian tube patency that also allows the doctor to assess the shape and cavity of the uterus. It is an outpatient method used in indicated cases as part of infertility diagnostics.
The examination is performed using vaginal ultrasound. A special foam contrast agent, which is clearly visible on ultrasound, is applied into the uterus through a thin catheter.
The doctor observes its passage through the uterus and fallopian tubes and assesses whether the fallopian tubes are freely patent, narrowed or blocked.
The entire examination usually takes 10–15 minutes and is performed in the first half of the menstrual cycle.
HyFoSy is part of extended diagnostics of female infertility and is recommended especially when there is a suspicion of blocked or narrowed fallopian tubes.
