Embryo monitoring

Embryo monitoring is an advanced technology that allows embryos to be cultured in a special incubator equipped with a camera that continuously monitors their development. This enables embryologists to assess embryo quality in detail and select the embryo with the highest potential for a successful pregnancy for transfer to the uterus.

Embryo monitoring (time-lapse monitoring)

After fertilisation using the ICSI method (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), the eggs are placed in a special culture dish and then into a time-lapse incubator with an integrated camera. The camera takes images of the developing embryos at regular intervals, allowing embryologists to continuously observe the individual stages of cell division in real time without the need to remove the culture dish from the incubator.

The images and data obtained are then evaluated by specialised software, which helps embryologists better assess embryo quality and their ability to continue developing properly. Based on this information, embryologists can select the most suitable embryos for transfer to the uterus (embryo transfer) or for freezing (cryopreservation), which may help improve the success of treatment.

Benefits of embryo monitoring

Undisturbed embryo culture – In standard embryo culture, embryos need to be repeatedly removed from the incubator for regular quality assessment, which may lead to fluctuations in temperature and other culture conditions. Embryo monitoring allows embryo development to be observed continuously directly inside the incubator, without the need for manipulation, helping to provide a more stable environment for their development.

Selection of embryos for transfer to the uterus – Thanks to detailed monitoring of embryo development, embryologists can better assess embryo quality. They evaluate not only the morphology, meaning the appearance of the embryo, but also the course of its development over time – the speed of cell division and the correct sequence of individual developmental stages. This information helps select the embryo with the highest potential for successful implantation and pregnancy.

Detection of abnormalities – Embryo monitoring makes it possible to detect abnormalities that may negatively affect embryo development. These may include irregular cell division, delayed division or the presence of multinucleated cells. Deviations from normal development generally reduce the probability of successful implantation in the uterus and may even lead to the arrest of embryo development. In some cases, they may also be associated with the development of genetic abnormalities in the foetus. Embryo monitoring therefore increases the chance of early identification of a problem and exclusion of such an embryo from selection for embryo transfer or cryopreservation.

1. Combination of incubator and embryo development monitoring:

The MIRI TL 12 is equipped with an integrated time-lapse monitoring system, which means that embryos can be observed without the need to remove them from the incubator. This incubator provides continuous recording and includes high-quality cameras that take images of embryos at regular intervals, usually every 5–10 minutes. The cameras are located inside the incubator and focus on each embryo individually.

2. Optimised conditions for embryo development

The incubator is equipped with advanced technologies that ensure a stable and optimal environment for embryo development. It regulates temperature, humidity, pH and the concentration of culture gases, all of which are essential for metabolism and proper embryo development.

3. Highly efficient embryo management

This incubator allows simultaneous monitoring of up to 12 culture dishes with embryos, with each culture dish able to contain up to 14 fertilised eggs.
